Embark, NDSM

168 rental flats in Amsterdam North

Embark will be a stunning timber residential complex in a fantastic location near the NDSM shipyard in Amsterdam North. The project comprises two separate timber buildings, with a total of 168 flats and approximately 11,200 m² GFA. One block is for social housing, the other for mid-range rental.

Commissioned by developers COD and Synchroon, Hamlet is responsible for the structural design and engineering of the CLT and glulam shell. The technical design has now been finalised.

Embark combines spans of up to 6.3 metres with seven storeys, a wide variety of housing types, façade systems and balconies. To ensure technical and economic feasibility, Hamlet first designed the timber structures, after which the other consultants were able to build on this work.  During the design phase, a 63-metre-high timber residential tower was also investigated for the development. That study demonstrated that high-rise construction using solid timber is structurally and economically feasible at this location. Due to the overall scale of the project, the client has decided to construct the tower in concrete after all ???? But one thing is certain: a 63-metre-high timber tower could certainly be built.
